How long does it take to charge an electric car at home?

Overnight on a Level 2 charger, or a day or more on a regular outlet. Adding 50 kWh from the wall, enough to take a 75 kWh battery from 20% to 80%, takes 6 hours 31 minutes on a 32 amp, 240 volt charger. On a 120 volt, 12 amp outlet it takes about 34.7 hours.

A 32 amp charger supplies 7.68 kW and the outlet supplies 1.44 kW, so the time is 50 kWh divided by each. The Department of Energy notes that many drivers cover their daily miles with the Level 1 cord that came with the car, as long as a dedicated outlet is nearby.

Bigger chargers are faster only up to the limit of the car's onboard charger. The guide to home EV charger sizes compares 16 to 48 amp units, and the EV charging time calculator runs your own numbers.
