Level 2 Charging

Level 2 charging is AC charging at 240 volts in homes or 208 volts at most commercial sites. The Department of Energy lists Level 2 equipment from 2.9 kW to 19.2 kW.

It adds about 25 miles of range per hour, according to the Alternative Fuels Data Center, which notes most home units run at up to 30 amps (7.2 kW) on a dedicated 40 amp circuit. A 32 amp charger at 240 volts supplies 7.7 kW and adds 50 kWh in 6 hours 31 minutes.

The car's onboard charger caps Level 2 speed. The guide to home EV charger sizes compares 16 to 48 amp units, and the EV charging time calculator works out your own time.
